restore deleted photos from trash

I accidently deleted a photo library by emptying my trash. The library had ended up in the trash by accident and I thought I had copy/pasted it from the trash onto an external hard drive. It said the Iphoto library on the external drive had 7G of photos and I could open them all, so I emptied the trash. When I did, I no longer could open the photos or iphoto library. I have time machine and am wondering if it is possible to restore the trash can to a pre-empty status. I can reset the entire hard drive if that will work as we have done nothing on here since my goof.

I appreciate any assistance as I am primarily a PC user and this Mac stuff is totally foreign to me. If you do reply, please assume I know nothing about the Mac, time machine, restoring, etc...

Many thanks to anyone who can help!

If you continue using your Mac, every minute that passes you greatly increase the chances that the data and files you want to recover may be overwritten. This includes if you have deleted an important file, email or photo.

If you are attempting to recover files from the Trash, note the following: If you've emptied the Trash or deleted the files with the rm (remove) command, your files and data is recoverable IF you STOP using your Mac right now. This is particularly true if you are currently running low on disk space. The Mac OS X overwrites this little free space very quickly with temp files.

Next, you can try to recover deleted Trash files on your Mac using a good recovery program. The best 2 are Data Rescue 3 and Stellar Mac Data Recovery - which are free I think.
good luck

Thank you for the suggestions. I did turn it off hoping to keep as much as possible. Am concerned that I won't have the room to download the software that could help me restore the lost items. Bummer - this was a lesson for sure. Thing is, I thought I had copied. Guess I need to learn more about how to tell if something is an alias vs the real deal.

OK MAte well good luck. Maybe you could use an external hd and download it there then run the program? Just an idea

If you have a Time Machine backup, you just have to open it, find the photos and copy them to your desktop and import them back. I haven't done this with iphoto stuff, so you may have to go back far enough and copy the whole library.

On most files that I have used Time Machine recovery I have just opened the folder and copied the documents across, but iphoto works a bit differently as regards storage and "just dragging and dropping" may not be enough.

Time Machine definitely lets you restore Mac to a particular date. However, this is not a sure shot method of recovering the deleted or lost photos. To completely recover deleted files on Mac, it is essential to download a good Mac recovery tool, ideally one that lets you recover files in various formats.

If Time machine is also unable to help you then only data recovery software can assist you very well. I know about one recovery utility i.e. Remo Recover which can support you to get back your deleted photos.
