Restoring time machine backup

I'm having trouble restoring a time machine backup on an external hard drive.

I was running leopard (not sure what version) on my macbook from may '06, and was using time machine for backups.

A bunch of programs got deleted and I ended up doing an erase and reinstall with the discs that came with the comp originally. I thought I would have no problem restoring my old system from time machine, but my original discs were OS version 10.4.6 which don't include time machine.

Can I access and restore a time machine backup on a hard drive without the time machine program on my computer?

If I do need the program running on my macbook to restore a backup, can I somehow just bring a copy from the hard drive and then do the restore, or do I need to get it on a disc??

Thanks in a advance for any help...

Cheers.

You need to boot your system from the Leopard DVD, this is where you'll find the options to restore from your TM backup.

Is there any way to do this without the disc?

I'm in a remote location using satellite internet access and don't have the disc with me or access to any stores to buy one.

Is it possible to purchase and download time machine online or is there any other way at all to restore anything off my external drive?

(I should mention, the only thing I need off the drive is pages to edit documents...is there any way to just bring this off the drive or do I need time machine to access anything in the backup?)

Thanks very much.

I've copied and pasted individual stuff from my time machine to the computer without doing the full restore.
