Ridiculously slow internet

I have been having slow internet on my Macbook Pro. I have Mac OS X version 10.6.2. I have a Netgear router(WNR 2000). The internet on my PC seems to be faster than my Mac which is crazy. I followed the step by step instructions that came with the router in setting it up with my verizon dsl modem so I don't know what could be the problem.

The ethernet cable is connected from my desktop PC to the router and there was a plug marked 2 that came with the router and that is connected between the router and the modem.

You should do a speed test on each while nothing else is running...

Compare the results, not only computer to computer but with how much bandwidth you actually have. Is the macbook directly connected or is it connected via wifi?
