Rip DVDs?

Is there a way that I can 'rip' a whole DVD to keep it on my HD like I do with my music in iTunes? It's just really convenient for me to take my movies with me on my iMac when I go to friends' places rather than tote around the DVDs AND the computer. (Most of my mates don't have DVD players).

I tried to just cmd + C, cmd + V all the file to a folder, then I tried to drag and drop, but every time I try to do it, the finder spits up a copying error half way through.

DVDs were designed so that they could not be ripped. they have an encoding called CSS which prevents the files from being copied, or being useful if you manage to copy them. to rip a DVD this encryption has to be broken. some people did break that encryption, but the people who spread the code were arrested. anyway, these days its pretty easy to find DeCSS.

there are programs that incorporate that decryption for OSX and let you rip DVDs. check out this thread
