Root Password = ?

i have myself setup as the administrator on this comp. and under USER i dont see anything listed for root or setting up a root password so i do a su and type in my admin pw thinking that , that will work and all i get is a sorry , now i do understand that you do have to be a root user to install alot of unix applications from source , such as gtk, glib , e.t.c. any suggestions?
 
root account is disabled by default. there is a thread devoted to the various ways of enabling it in the how-to section. check it out.

one simple way: sudo passwd root
