Router recommendations?

I need a router that supports assigning ports to IPs, so if the router e.g. gets a request on port 80, it will redirect to 192.168.0.1. Do normal, cheap "home" routers do that?
It also has to support PPPoE and bandwith up to 2.3 Mbits each way. Any recommendations? :)

I have a Netgear rt314 (4 ports + WAN) here that works perfectly. I've been using it for over a year and haven't had any problems. It's a home-small office type router/switch combo. It has port forwarding, PPPoE support, and it can do 10/100. It also has a lot of other features that you can find on their site.

The only thing that might get me to replace this one is a wireless network. Netgear products are some of the best I've used.

I use MIH 130A XROUTER PRO (MacSense) which works perfectly also. Info at URL:

Firmware upgradable.

I hear Asante routers work well too. Both of these have Mac support in documentation and website support.

People are using Dlink, Linksys on macs too. These lack direct Mac support but can be figured out without much difficulty.

Check out a recent MacWorld article on routers if you need info about which support Appletalk etc.

I use a DLink DI-604 - it has direct Mac support - and works perfectly. The usual web-based configuration and it's firmware-upgradeable from the Mac.

I use a Linksys HPRO200 (With the firmware update... it won't work if you don't update it... lol... bad bug... when it first came out etc... )

works great if you use a home network phone line setup...

Linksys BEFSR41
EtherFast Cable/DSL Router & 4-port switch

We have used both the single port and 4-port models. They have never failed or gone down on us. They are rock solid and inexpensive.

Just thought I'd chip in...

I'm using the Netgear DG814 and have been very happy with it. It seems to be fast and reliable and it is very easy to setup and modify the settings.

The DG814 is a combined ADSL modem and 4 port 10/100 Base-T ethernet switch. NAT, port forwarding, content filtering, logging, and web-based administration are all part of its features. It handles speeds up to 200 Mbps ("with full duplex"), I believe. The (software) ports are stealthed, rather than just closed, though the latest firmware has a bug which shows a few ports as being simply closed, but that is expected to be fixed soon.

If you want more information, try:

http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DG814.asp?view=

or, in general, a good ADSL site is:

Good luck with the decision!
:)
