Run Recovery Software from Installation CD (Using an External Drive)

Hullo, I just did what probably many of us have done at some point, and inadvertently deleted some important stuff. I don't have another computer but I do have another drive so this is what I tried to do: I downloaded and installed a recovery program onto the external drive, then I booted up from my installation cd. Then I tried to run the recovery app from Terminal, but... there doesn't seem to be any way to do it :( Many of the commands are missing. Anybody have any pointers? Is it even possible to run apps other than the provided utilities from the intallation cd? Thanks

Edit: I should have added that I'm running the latest version/update of OS X on an Intel Mac (MacBook Pro).

Edit: Haha, in case anyone wonders how I'm still using the computer if I don't have another one (and obviously I wouldn't want to because apparently it increases the chances of not recovering data), I'm on the Windows side of my BootCamped-out computer.

Why not try installing OS X on your external drive, boot from that and try the recovery software.
