Running Illustrator 8 on Mac OS X 10.4.11

Hey there! I've been a user of Adobe Photoshop forever, and assumed that since I could install an older version of PS (version 7) on my Mac OS X 10.4.11 that an older version of Illustrator would work as well.

I tried calling Adobe, but - as per usual in most places - the person I spoke with was fairly clueless... obviously reading an answer off of a script. They said that Adobe Illustrator 8 wouldn't work with OS X. I found this thread here: http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/294778-illustrator-file-previews.html

That thread clearly states that someone has 8 working on an OS X system (10.4.8 is the lastest mentioned, which is darn close enough!).

However, when I try to run the installation program on my disc, I get this:

"You cannot open the application 'Install Adobe Illustrator' because it is not supported on this system."

I'm a fairly new Mac user, and so I thought I'd ask here how exactly I would go about getting this installation to work. If I ask Adobe, they are obviously going to try to get me to buy CS3, which they state is the only one which will work with OS X 10.XX - but this obviously isn't true. Is there anyone that can help me?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Edit: Oh, also... forgot to clarify that I DO have the MAC version of Adobe Illustrator 8.0.1 (that's what it says on the disc)... just in case someone thought I was stupid and trying to install a Windows version :)

ya AI 8 is not going to work in OSX I can't remember what the 1st OSX native version os Illustrator was, but I know it isn't version 8.

So, in that other post... that other guy was just mistaken, perhaps? I guess I was hoping that there was something out there that had been done to MAKE it work with the more current OS's... the way that some older games have been fixed to work with newer versions of Windows (although, admittedly, since Windows is basically the same OS rehashed over and over, I can see why this would be different).

Thanks anyway :)

If you boot your computer into Mac OS 9, you should be able to install Illustrator 8. Then when you're finished, boot back into X and make sure the Classic is configured to run on your System (Apple Menu > System Preferences > Classic).

You should then be able to run AI 8 with classic.

If you're running an Intel-based Mac, you're SOL because you cannot boot into OS 9 on an Intel Mac.

Everything you ever wanted to know about using Classic in Tiger here:

OS 9 Support Page:

I believe Classic support is now discontinued:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_9
"Retail copies of Mac OS 9 are still available from several Internet businesses at varying prices. Mac OS 9 is no longer available from Apple. Mac OS 9 is not yet classified as abandonware, as it is still in wide use by those who cannot upgrade to Mac OS X due to hardware limitations, or prefer it to Mac OS X."
