SBOD after "Go To Login Screen"

I'm getting the SBOD after selecting "Go To Login Screen" on my 10.5.5 Intel iMac. This happens about once a week. I have 4 users defined and mine is the only admin user (the others are currently logged in). I can still ssh into the machine (but not VNC), and have tried killing off all of my processes (since I was the last active user), but it still does not go to the user selector display (stays on a blank blue screen with the SBOD). This forces me to hard boot the machine to escape, but the other users may have unsaved data.

I've tried kill off other user's processes but that does not appear to help either.

Any ideas? The only common thread appears to be that at least one user will have iTunes running when this happens.

Look at logs in Console to see what was causing the beachball the next time that happens. Logs, logs, logs... they will tell what was tried to be done when that happened.

So your login screen issue only occurs if a previous user is logged in and have their iTunes running? Does iTunes not running make a difference for this? If the previous user logs off and quits their programs to get to the login screen?
