Scanner does not work

Arden

Where mah "any" keys at?
I have a UMAX Astra 1220U hooked up to my iMac through a USB hub. Every time I try to scan something, it says "Scanner failed to do calibration. Driver -5". (This is in Photoshop under 9.2.2.) This is confounding because the scanner had no problem running on my mom's iBook. (I don't think it's the hub because the Zip and floppy drives hooked up to it don't have any problems running.) Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have the latest Vista Scan driver installed? It is version 3.5.4 that works with OS 9 and usb.

FYI, the Vista Scan 3.7.5 driver files on the UK site are corrupt, so I had to download them from the German site.

I had to attempt to dl them 3 or 4 times - finally worked from the UK site. Not sure what's up with their server, but it does work eventually.

Did 3.7.5 work for you?

just a tip - if you're using vista scan, you might want to try the magic scan instead. it seems to work on the same scanners and allows you to scan from classic mode without crashing for some reason.

From the umax.co website:

Current high-end SCSI models: PowerLook II, PowerLook III, PowerLook 3000, Mirage II, Mirage IIse, and the new PowerLook 1100 (Firewire) and PowerLook 2100XL.

Unofficially some earlier MagicScan versions also provides limited support for low-end SCSI models, eg Astra 2400S, 1220S, 1200S, 610S, Vista series.

But if you think it works with the 1220U, I'll try it!

it works with my 2000u is all i can say. vista crashes classic when i quit, magic doesn't.

See, I'm not trying to scan in Classic, I'm trying to scan in OS 9.2.2 and Photoshop. And I've determined that it's not the software and probably not the hub, so it's some kind of conflict involving any number of components. I know the USB cable works because when I try to preview, the scanner goes "bvvp" and then I get the failure alert. I'll try Magicscan as well and report back later.

Hey, edX: you were right! MagicScan works perfectly in 9.2.2 with the 1220U.

I couldn't get it to work on our new (to us) Sawtooth even though it worked on the B&W (I couldn't even boot after I installed VistaScan 3.7.5) so I tried MagicScan with the 1220U extension from VistaScan - works perfectly. And without the cheesy interface of VistaScan, too.

There's an OS X version of MagicScan - anyone tried it?

Thanks for sharing this. The scanner does not work on my iMac, but it does on my dad's iBook... makes me wonder. I'll try MagicScan if he'll let me. ;)
