Screen "radiation"

Just a thought-

Can being in front of a computer screen for a couple hours a day (for me it's the 17in eMac built-in CRT) affect you negatively? And if so, to what extent? Does it cause harm to your eyes? Or something else?

Thx to all replies.

Hi,

I don't believe any modern CRT's have enough voltage to generate X-Rays. Even in the days where TV's had some, you had to be almost touching the screen to get anything measurable, and if I remember, there was actually more off to the sides [of the tube].

If your eyes are beginning to hurt, then yes... the hours infront of a CRT are likely to be the problem, not the radiation, but the dryness that comes with staring.

I am not a doctor, but I do know that when you concentrate on an image, you have to force yourself to blink more often, to keep eyes moist. Try some drops too, but stay away from long term use of steriod based drops (the ones that get the red out).

If it still hurts, see a doctor.

Staring at a screen for too long can certainly cause headaches and sight near-sightedness. Staring at anything too long can, especially when it's lit. And especially when it's flickering, like CRTs. LCDs are easier on the eyes, since they don't flicker.

I wouldn't worry too much, though. Be aware of how you feel, and take breaks as often as you see fit, even if they're only brief. There's an oft-quoted "20/20/20 rule", which states: for every 20 minutes at the computer (or TV), stop and focus on an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a bit of a workout and can relieve some of the stress on them.

CRT's are harder on the eyes as they don't show a constant image, instead flashing images up in a sort of animation. the faster the refresh rate, the easier on the eyes, but generally anything under 70hz is painful, and anything over 85hz is 'fine'. but at the end of the day it still is 'flashing', regardless of how fast it is, so brain gets tired.

having said that, alsthough LCDs show a constant image, eyes still do get sore, but a lot less so (i've found)

I'm not having any sort of eye problems, I just heard from a friend that it could harm you, and was wondering what other opions were. :)

I work with computers for a living, and I have a special pair of Rx glasses for my computer work. They allow my eyes to focus on the close-up monitor while the focusing muscles are almost perfectly relaxed. They're great!

I just heard something on NPR this morning that I thought was funny... Seems that there is some study that says spending too much time on email and IM will decrease your IQ by 10 points.

...of course beleiving that might also imply that you're -10 points. ;)

That fact is truly ridiculous. I think quite the contrary, that IM'ing and emailing can help you to socially develope yourself with others, and increase your social IQ.

RX glasses? i want some - i hate staring at a screen for 9 hours a day. my eyes are so sore, just from not doing anything. where can i get them from? are they expensive?
