I am trying to set up a second monitor on my emac, not as a mirrored monitor but as an extended desktop. Do I need to add an external video card...? Does such a thing even exist or work with an emac...? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

This is what a quick, and very simple, Google search showed:

Check the Supported Systems page first, of course.

As a side note, when I first did that hack on my iBook, it required Open Firmware hacking. How things have changed!

EDIT: and yes, it does support eMacs and iMacs, not only iBooks.
