Selecting multiple folders

Pre OSX, it was possible to select several folders from a list without auto selecting all the ones in between... Now if I click on (for example) folders 3 and 6, then it automatically selects 4 and 5 as well... Very annoying...

Is there a way to avoid this...?

Apologies if I'm being stupid - only just starting out on OSX after years of 'classic'.
