Sent to me in Wide-Screen?

A friend of mine sent me a MPEG movie today and when I played it, it was in wide-screen. Thing is this movie wasn't saved originally in wide-screen. So the picture has been smashed and wont stretch it's self any other way.
I'm getting this between friends harassment about it's because I use a Mac. Ha..ha..ha.. Anyway I like to know why it's doing this and what can I do to fix it.
 
You should mention which player you are using for playing back that mpeg movie. Quicktime? VLC? Mediaplayer?
If you didn't try vlc yet, I would recommend you to download that freeware and enjoy it. It's a great player
 
Opps, sorry. I should have mentioned that. Um let's see here. He played the movie in WinMap and when it was sent to me it came with a Quicktime logo on it so Quicktime opens it. Now, I did just now try VLC Media Player as suggested and the movie plays just fine in it. It's still kinda odd how it plays in QT but of well. Thanks for your help Zammy.
 
Another tip: If you have quicktime pro, you can adjust the size and orientation of movies in QT movie player, by checking the properties.
