Ok so i am the end of my tether here...

This has happened ever since i got my Macbook Pro, but is now happening all the time.

One program will freeze, bringing up the rainbow disc. I will try and force quit it from the dock, but it will not work. So i then try the force quit from the apple menu and the program will dissapear from the list and from the screen. BUT, it would still be active in the dock to which if i right clicked it would still say application not responding. It would then re-appear in the force quit menu.

Then if i try and close any other open program, the same thing will happen. If i can get all the program windows to close then the computer will start shutting down (with all the apps still active in the dock), but will never get past the blue screen and waiting disc. I then have to do a hard restart.

Recently this has started tot happen once/twice a day and today i phoned support who said i needed to do a hardware startup check, to which i did a full one and no errors appeared. I was then told to do a full erase and reboot, which i did, but the problem has just happened again with programs that were previously alright. I did a disc utility check and it came back fine. I have also tried the terminal kill commands, but it has the same effect as the force quit. The apps do not appear in the activity monitor after they have 'quit' but are still active in the dock.

I am all out of ideas. Apart from being EXTREMELY frustrating, im worried that doing regular hard restarts will damage my system. Please help!

It's quite difficult to say what is behind all this but I can empathise with the frustration you are feeling with it all ....

I would start using another user account, you can create one in System Preferences > Accounts. See if all this continues in a fresh account.

Another thing you could try is log in using Safe Mode. Start your mac holding the Shift key when you hear the startup chime and it'll take a little while, but eventually you will be able to log in.

What kind of apps are misbehaving?

Finally, you could download OnyX and run it to see if this helps, but first try the other User account.

There are a gazillion 3rd Party maintenance apps out there but I use the above app and run it from an Admin Account. Make sure you quit all apps when running OnyX (hopefully Onyx won't crash!) and don't use your mac other than to run the default settings in the Cleaning & Maintenance tabs. You'll be prompted to reboot several times and if the boot process takes forever this in quite normal so don't worry.

Hope this helps.
