Serous LAG problem on Dual G5, "stuck" processes

Fahrvergnuugen

I am the law!
I cannot figure out what is going on, something is very very wrong with my G5 (software or hardware, I don't know).

Right now, if I try and click one of my book mark drop downs in safari, the entire system will hang.

I am running top in the background and when everything hangs, stuck processes will show up at the top next to running, sleeping, etc.

It will sit there with the spinning beach ball, first it will says 1 stuck, then 2 then 3 and then suddenly the drop down will show my bookmarks and the system will return to normal.

What the heck is going on??

could be a memory issue :| most likely if it's hardware, that is what it is...but it could be an array of other problems, i'd get it checked out :) But you already know that, heh.

Well, it turns out that the ONLY thing that would cause my system to freeze up were my bookmarks. I trashed the Safari folder in my Library... but when I tried to empty the trash, the whole system locked up again.

rm -r * in my .Trashes folder would lock the system as well and cause processes to get stuck. It failed with an input / output error.

I booted to my panther CD and ran disk utility, it found a ton of errors but was unable to fix them. I broke out diskwarrior and that was unsuccessful at replacing the directory information (it kept saying the disk was locked, even though it wasn't). So I ran disk utility again... viola - came out clean.

I manually deleted all of the files and folders from the .Trash folder (very time consuming) but it worked.

Everything seems to be ok at the moment... lets hope it stays that way.

I've had very poor luck with disk utilities in the past.

It was able to rebuild the directory but it was unable to copy it or something like that...it kept saying the disk was locked even though it wasn't.

I had to install OSX on a firewire disk and boot to that because the diskwarrior CD is unbootable for G5s.
