Setting scratch disk in iMovie

A friend of mine just bought an external hard drive he wants to use to store his video for iMovie. We've both gone through the preferences and help section and can't find a way to set the external as the capture scratch. I'm used to working with Final Cut where that can be easily set, but iMovie has us stumped. Is there a way to choose where the captured video goes or is it automatic to save captured footage to the Documents>Movies folder?

You save the project file where you want the footage to go. That's about as advanced as iMovie gets for scratch disks.
