Sharing and Permissions

I cannot access or change some sharing or permissions when I put in a disc on my iMac. I have done all that the program asked but cannot change so I can run the program. The message I am getting is as follows: cannot currently be run from this disc because Max os x ignores ownership of some disk by default. Please restart from the disc or follow the instructions below;
1. select the disk icon in the finder
2. choose "get info" from the file menu
3. click the sharing & permissions triangle
4. uncheck "ignore ownership on this volume.

I can get through 1 to 3 but the UNCHECK "Ignore ownership on this volume is not there. Any ideas.

Which disk are you running this program from? Internal system disk? External disk? Other system volume? NFS?
How is this system formatted?
