Here's how I recommend you do it.
On OS X, find out the queue name like this - highlight the printer in Printer Setup, click Show Info, and find and write down the exact queue name. Also write down or remember the OS X IP address (Network Prefs).
On OS 9, start the "Desktop Printer Utility." Create an LPR/LPD printer. Enter the IP address and queue name from OS X. for PPD, choose an Apple Color Laserwriter (any one). Finish up. Now when you print, select the Laserwriter 8 driver and printer you created.
Note: This method sends postscript from OS 9 to OS X, and the driver on OS X translates the input to output for the printer. It is true that you don't have much control over the printer this way.
