Sherlock 3 >> Apple web browser?

I was just looking at the Jaguar stuff at apple.com. Aside from being bummed that I need a new graphics card to get Quartz Extreme going, I was intrigued by what I saw of Sherlock 3.

I really never use Sherlock except to find stuff on my own disk, as google does as well or better in finding info. But with the ability to display info it finds within Sherlock... man that seems about half a step from being a full on web browser. Not saying Apple will do that, but it sure seems like it wouldn't be that hard to.

Who knows!? Nobody was really expecting the iPod when Apple released it...but then again: it's not software. :)

you know, mail.app also has the ability to render html. i d wager that sherlock and mail.app use the same shared library. i think it would be great if apple made a web browser. but i guess there are already threads devoted to that question.

maybe apple should buy omnigroup. they have been a NeXT/Apple only software maker forever, and they are very inline with the apple philosophy, i think.

I don't think Apple should make a web browser. There's plenty of open source gecko code out there that somebody could put together a really nice browser, like Chimera is doing.

Hmmm... that's if you think Gecko is up to snuff. Basically my view on all the browsers out there is that they've got some good things going, but not enough. Mozilla is reasonably quick, but fairly ugly to go along with it.

I really am not sure Apple should go buying up OW (as a stock holder I'd have to oppose that) since OW is a relatively small player, and while making a beautiful browser with great features, its also dog slow compared to Mozilla or IE.

But hey, favorite browser threads have been beaten to death. I guess I'm saying that I'd be all for Apple throwing their hat in the ring and giving it a shot, but I'd hope they'd do their own thing if they chose to enter the fray.

I don't think they will personally.

Gecko is more "up to snuff" then Apple's built in cocoa html rendering engine or any other engine out there. :D

I second that! Gecko is a great engine. Unfortunately none of the browsers implementing in on Mac OS X is up to speed yet. I can't use anything but Mozilla on Win2K, it's such a great browser!
