Simple Router Quesion

Someone asked me a quesion today about why they can't connect to the internet using their new wireless router. They are able to access local computers on the network but not the internet, which then leads me to my quesion.

How do they connect to the internet? do you have to enter any information for them to connect? There is an ISP in the area where your modem doesn't just connect automatically, you need a username and password, I suspect they use this internet service so how would that work with a d-link router?

P.S. They do use high speed

High speed usually refers to either DSL or cable, but those two use different connection protocols. If you mean high speed as in DSL, then they almost always require username and password for their protocol - PPPoE. When you have a router, you need to set the router up to do the PPPoE authentication - and individual computers no longer do that. The individual computers need to have network prefs > built in ethernet or Airport set up to get IP address via DHCP and turn off connect using PPPoE.

That explains everything. Thanks. I know it was a stupid quesion, especially considering that I'm in I.T. But i'm use to the Unix gateway that is in my house being used as a router. Thanks again
