A .sit file is a compressed archive created by a member of the Stuffit family. It is not an application. However, the archive may contain applications or any number of other filetypes. Of course, you may decompress [or un-Stuff] the archive using Stuffit Expander.
 
.zip is Coke, .sit is Pepsi. (Just to add a little to the correct explanations.)
