Sleep Function Disappeared

I have a powerbook pismo, running on OS 9.2.2
just crashed and after re-starting my sleep function has dissapeared, I can only shut down, has any one had this problem ? or know how I can get the sleep function working again ?
would appreciate any help.

Look in your Finder Preferences and make sure it's not set to Simple Finder.

hello Bob, well I have to say that was quick.....I was just about to edit my message and your reply came up.....thanks for taking the time, I've tried to find the Finder preferances, looked in preferences and tried to find the finder folder, there isn't one, where do I have to look for it ?

Click on the Desktop to make sure you're in the Finder, then go to the Finder Menu at the top of screen to the Preferences. I believe it's under the Finder Menu, haven't used OS 9 in a few years.

hello Bob,

your a life saver, I was looking too hard at the begining, went into the hard disc preferences instead of the ones on the destop and after clicking on the desktop....voila.....i recently changed the folder distance to make them more compact to each other.....maybe that set off the problem in the first place.....well......hope I nearly have enough to buy a new Mac.....although my pismo has served me well for the last 4 years.....i need a bigger screen as i am working with a lot of excel sheets open at the same time and copying from one to the other.....look forward to getting into mac osx.....hope the new mac duals are not a problem.....

You should periodically rebuild the desktop. When you start up (next time) hold down the option and the apple keys. Continue to hold them down until you get a dialog box asking if you wish to do a desktop rebuild. This will appear after the extensions load at the bottom of the screen.
Release the keys when that dialog box comes up, click on okay.

When done, you will have a smoother working machine. :)

hello Cheryl, thanks for the tip......I will try it next time I have to re-start and see if it helps.....I'll be going on holiday in the next few days.....so I will let you know in a couple of weeks how i got on.
thanking you for taking the time, i'm a kind of learning by doing computer person, so I'm happy for every help I can get......and I'm a total Mac fan.....just need to get myself on to mac osx and enjoy the features of the new system.

chello Cheryl,
I Tried what you suggested regarding re-building the desktop, and after the re-start the message came up and I pressed OK....then the norton disc doctor started up to fix files.....and then after it was finished, all my excel, word,pdf files etc......all now look plain white also my email attachments the same.
do you know how i can revert them back to the excel or word look ?
would appreciate your help.

Uninstall Norton !!!!

Norton only causes problems when installed, just like this time. Norton Utilities is good for the bootable CD to fix problems. Installing it just is not recommended.

In fact any Utility installed on your start up disk will not correctly fix the hard drive. Disk First Aid does not work unless you have it on a bootable disk.

Trash all the Norton Utility files, then try the rebuild desktop it again.
