Dear all,
I searched the posts archived in these forums on the following issue but found nothing that specifically relates to what I'm experiencing.
A couple of weeks ago, the sleep light on my powerbook G4 started to come on all the time. This doesn't happen all the time, but now most of the time. I didn't noticed it until last night, but it seems that when this occurs the backlit keyboard is also non-functional.
A friend told me that the sleep being on constantly was an indication of an issue with the USB ports, which would be grave because they are linked directly to the logicboard.
I'm not sure if it is related or not, but I had some relatively serious problems with the directory of my hard drive (sibling link failures). I spent a couple of days this weekend cloning and then fixing the problems with Diskwarrior and Disk Utility. It appears the directory is fine now (though I did have to do an archive and install and could, if necessary, clone the good drive and wipe the original drive and start completely afresh). The problem, however, of the sleep light has not gone away. My friend had originally suggested that an erase and reinstall might cure the issue.
Can anyone give any practical advice on this issue? I cannot afford to lose my logicboard, especially given that I live in Egypt where a new logicboard would be hard to find and may not be able to be fitted.
Should I worry? Does this symptom mean that my logicboard is on the way out?
UPDATE: Today I noticed my screen brightness flickered, as if the sensor was assessing the ambient light. I switched off the lights and tried again F10 for the backlit keyboard. It worked (and still works, though very dimly), but the sleep light is still on, constantly. Before I had thought it might be related to pressure on the casing, around the trackpad area. It doesn't seem so, however, as I tried gently pressuring the casing and the backlit keyboard remained dimly lit ........ So this seems a hardware issue.
Last night I zapped the PRAM three times in a row, but it make no difference at all.
Hoping someone will see this post and can give advice.
regards,
Dr Ian Douglas
