how many would say sleep mode is ok for your mac or pc? i occasionally i put my pc&mac on stand-by and i'm mostly concerned with lcd displays and their screenlife. also will it ruin them by putting them to sleep then turning them on walk away come back a couple of hours turn it on use it for about 2-4 hours, repeat, etc.

is QEor QE2d enabled in tiger 10.4.3 for the imac 1.6ghz G5 1gb ram 17" no ambient. and if so why does the nvidia 64meg built in suxk so bad? is there anyway to increase my performance from this unit?

sleep is widely thought of to be more power efficient than turning it all the way off and all the way on again. although, 50 million tons of Co2 is produced by UK households annually from equipment left on standby, apparently.

it could go either way. i go to sleep with music on, and my mac is in my bedroom/studio. in the morning, it always seems to be awake. the screen i turn off, although i suspect that this is just a sleep mode.

You should have started a new thread, but never mind. Quartz Extreme is enabled by default. Quartz 2D Extreme is disabled by default, it's a new technology not ready for full implementation yet, in 10.4.3.

i was going to say try adding more ram, but you already have 1gb. not sure then in that case. you could try turning Q2DE on if you want.

1) get your tiger disk, and install the developer tools/Xcode.

2)once done, spotlight for "quartz debug"

3)the icon should have a little green QE in it. this means Quartz Extreme is running. play around with the options, you can turn QE off, Q2dE on (requires log-out/in to work fully). you could also try turning the beam syncing off (Tools>Show Beam Sync Controls). play around with other things too.

with Q2DE on and Beam Syncing off, things should be much faster, but always allow for a slightly buggy experience. you could well be fine, but this is not finsished technology, it's for developers.

Quartz Debug will revert back when you quit, so force quit out of it (apple+alt+esc)

Apple strongly advises NOT to enable it. (Has it even removed the ability? Don't remember...) Also, it doesn't really have a big effect on most things, anyway. It's a bit like adding racing stripes to your car.

Using the Quartz Debug tool you can turn it on and off. I activated it on mine out of curiousity. It gave a few minor graphical bugs, and not much speed benefit, so I guess its not really ready for general use - yet.

As for sleep, I use it all the time, and only shutdown if I'm going to be away for more than a day or two, or if I have to unplug the computer. I suspect that it uses as much power to bootup as it does to stay in sleep mode all day.
