I have dial-up connection which is usually around 46kbps on my Windows XP. But using the same connection on my iMac OS8.5, the speed is usually only 28kbps. Is there a way to configure this so that the speed is faster?

You probably have a 28.8k modem on your Mac. You will have to replace it with a 56k modem like you have on your Windows computer.

What model name/model # is the Mac?
I'm guessing it's in the Powermac Pre-G3 models.

You'd need to find a 56K modem to replace the 28.8K. One of my old PCs had a 28.8K and I could never figure out why it was slow until I looked in windows device manager.

I think I have the oldest iMac, the bondi blue one. Can you get modems anywhere or just in computer stores?

I believe the first gen iMacs (bondi blue) had a 33.6 kbps modem. This was then upgraded to 56K in later models if i'm not mistaken.

I don't think you can replace the internal one, but there might be some external modems you can look at. Check out the usual places online like Macmall.com or other Apple resellers.
