I'm trying to connect my Mac (running OsX 10.3.9, with all patches from Software Update) to a Samba smb share.
I am using the finder -> go -> connect to server then entering;
smb://<ip address>/russ
If I connect to a local development box (on the local internal network) it works fine - I get prompted for my username & password, then the folder opens ok.
If I connect to the production box (on the internet) I get the following error;
"The finder cannot complete the operation because som data in "smb://<ip address>/russ" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)"
If I load up 'console', it reports the following error as well;
mount_smbfs: negotiate phase failed: syserr: Operation timed out
I've checked my keychain for anything odd - its clear. I've rebooted - no effect. Checked "mount" from terminal for duff shares - nothing.
I am using an IP address, its 100% the correct one (I can open a ssh session from termial to the server). Both the production and development servers are running Debian Sarge 3.1, with minimal services, no firewalls and a pretty basic Samba configuration. Pinging also works fine for both servers.
The same share (on the internet) works from the Windows XP box sitting next to me, so its something Mac-ish?
