We first need to know what operating system and version. OS 9 and below had no support for SMB (unless you purchase DAVE from Thursby Software).
With OS X versions 10.2 and up, the Mac should be able to detect Windows machine automatically once you head to either Go-->Connect to Server on the Finder menu or in Network from within the Finder.
