software update question

I did a search on this site but I didn't see what I was looking for.

I have eight software update packages waiting for me to install them. However, I don't want them taking up space on my disk. They are all language support packs for languages that I don't speak.

Is there any way to get them off my list? I've heard of people disabling the automatic updates but that's not what I want. What I want is to simply skip these language packs.

Any ideas?

i think this is what you want - run software update. highlight all the updates you don't want. go to Update/Make Inactive. they will disappear from your screen. you can always view them and activate them later if you have a need to do so.

Thanks, that was it. I hope that I don't miss out on any future updates for something that I do want because of that.

well, we seem to do a pretty decent job of informing each other around here whenever anything new comes out. so if somebody says something about something you need and it's not showing up, might be time to pull em backout and see what's going on. of course if you have to have them installed, then it sucks either way. surely apple wouldn't warn you not to download something if you don't need it and make you miss something you do need because of it. surely. (?)

With language updates and printer drivers, it's probably safe; there should be no dependencies on those for future updates to, say, 10.2.. However, I would bet that updates to things like Software Update, or security updates should not be deactivated for that very reason - 10.2 (or some other future update) could be dependent. I doubt any of the software updates can come in as "mandatory" right now, not allowing deactivation. It would be a nice touch, though, to prevent that sort of problem. Perhaps in a future version of Software update?
