How do i remove things from software update? i have no need or desire to insall foreign languages on my machine or print drivers for machines i dont have. Can i download stuff without installing it? Or what? My software update has probably 8 things in it that i dont want.

All that you need to do is select/highlight all of the software updates which you don't want to install (don't check the boxes, just click on the names themselves or hit Command+A [for select all]). Then just go to the "Update" Menu (top of screen) and select "Make Inactive" from them Update Menu (you can "show" them or re-"hide" them at any time) and next time you use Software Update they will not be there (but S.U. may ask you if you want to view the Inactive updaters -- you can just say "no" [like Nancy Regan used to say]).

I was hoping there was a way to not just make it inactive, but to remove it completely so that it doesn't show up inactive as well.

The reason I ask this is because if you wish to update manually by clicking the update button in Software update, you get a dialog box telling you that you have x number of inactive updates.

I may have a fix for my own problem, but wanted to know from others if they have tried this or if there are other options.

My fix for this would be to right down the updates in question and place empty files with these names in the /library/receipts/ folder.

Twister,

I believe the updater wants to try to install the foreign language updates because they're already on your system.

By default the 10.1 updater installs the foreign language packs by default ( correct me if I'm wrong on this. )

Next time you do an install of 10.1, choose custom and opt out of installing these language packs. Then the updater will not request to update them because it does not find them on your system.

Alas, that ain't it. I installed 10.1 with no foreign launguage additions at all, and SU still offered me all the new ones.
