Software Upgrade "destroyed" the Mac

Today I installed Protools 7 which is an upgrade to Protools 6.9.3 Normally these upgrades happen without any problems but. . .

After the upgrade, the application would not start. Other applications which depend on the core audio driver (Reason, Spark, Kontact) would crash upon launch. Also, Safari would shut down after a few minutes. Adobe reader will not run, etc. I could not uninstall the application because this mac will no longer run any install application at all. I can click on them all day long but nothing happens.

I ran the usual disk utility and repaired permissions but that didn't help and i trashed the entire program that I had attempted to upgrade but that didn't help either.

Any suggestions? how do you get a mac that will not even run an install program out of this mess.

Upgraded 500mhz G4 (currently 1.4ghz)
2gigs Ram
OSX 10.4.1 (or whatever the latest .# happens to be)
