some items will not empty from trash

there are certain items that will not empty from my trash. Using Leopard 10.5.6, a bunch of files (particularly a set of "favorites" that come stuffed in the original OS bundle, 2 iMovie project folders that are each 6.55GB, various other items such as the Chess.app, that i didn't want)
so with the iMovie items i've got a wasted 13GB of space. these two items just won't delete.
sometimes i put suspicious items in a New folder from within trash, and put this folder on desktop, in order to try to get items i let remain in trash to delete for good. sometimes this works.
but sometimes if i dunderheadedly drag a "favorite" from trash to desktop, it merely places a NEW copy on desktop, and leaves the item in trash.
thus i've generated a second, unremovable, item, doubling the unremovable size apparently.
tho it's only 13 GB roughly dead in the trash water, i'd like to actually empty the trash.
questions: does the fact that i have a time machine disk that has records back a year stop some of these trashed items from deleting? i should not think so, since they should be archived in TM somewhere. otherwise what would be the secure value of the time machine backups anyway, if they could be compromised by something in trash that was deleted!?

i've tried to use command-delete, etc.
i have 4 500GB HD, 2.2.66GHz macpro, 9GB RAM

thanks for any insights,
michael.

It is now day 2, after this report of my mac pro spontaneously 'turning on' in the dead of night.
this morning the screen was in blank (i supposed it meant, sleeping) mode, and the wee white light showed the tower was turned on. i couldn't get the monitor to present a usual mac desktop, so as always i rebooted, by holding down the button for a long time.
the first thing that came up was the apple report dialog box, and below i post a copy of all of it.

shortly after i 'sent' the report, firefox crashed, and was easily restarted, and it restored various pages i had open.

here is the report:
