Splinter Cell - Cant save!

OK, so in the training mission it does an autosave. When I good up and get caught - it does an autoload, but it seems to just stick to the autoload screen and no go anywhere - like a crash, but I can still look around using my mouse.

Now I decided to save, so I did. I saved 10 times and NONE of my supposed saves where in the "load" screen. I managed to clear the training mission without goof ups, and to go to the first real mission. I saved again, nothing, nothing in my "load" list. What gives ?

ANyone else experience this?

weird....I logged in as root (I know, I know, I shouldn't do that) and it all works!

Now here is what I was doing before:
My account (admin) - cannot run the game - some things dont run, something is screwed up
I have a "gamer" account which runs the game, but cannot save!
root runs and saves!

so I think it's a permissions issue.
