Spotlight dropdown menu doesn't dropdown

Please help, this is driving me nuts!!!! My spotlight menu (the top righthand icon) doesn't drop down when clicked. It doesn't even highlight when clicked. The strange thing is though, that if i do the [apple+space] command it does highlight, but still not drop down. even stranger is the fact that if i do the [option+apple+space] command, the spotlight window opens and works perfectly. So the problem is just with the dropdown menu, not with the actual spotlight search.

This problem kind of just started on its own; occasionally in the past the menu wouldn't work until I re-booted, but now that doesnt fix it. Even archieve and reinstalling the OS didn't help. The problem doesn't seem to be connected with the install of new software, except it got worse when I installed 10.4.4 update, then stoped working completly.

Please help, i've tried everything i can think of, aside from a complete reinstall...

Have you tried trashing the com.apple.spotlight.plist file, located in the ~/Library/Preferences folder?
 
Yeah, I tried that, still to no avail. I did descover one thing though - spotlight works perfectly in other user accounts. I think my best option is to just create a new account, transfer my file to it, and hope for the best. If that doesn't work i'll just format... at least mac os installs quickly!!!
