Spring-loading into columns?

I use column view only, and I find that if I drag a file over another folder, instead of opening that folder into the next column, it opens it as a seperate window in icon view. Huh? I set Finder to always use column view, and opening a new window is not checked. What's going on?

I am wondering about that, too. At the Macworld Expo a spring-loaded column view was shown, so where did it go?

I'm sure about this because it works for me the way it is supposed to. I can't recall if I had to do anything special to get this to work or not.
