start up disc full

hi, need some help with my old G4..when i boot up it asks as usual for password then goes to a blue screen for a few seconds and then back to asking for password cant get any further, has been telling me start up disc is almost full for some time.how do i get into the g4 to delete files and clean up hard drive- start up disc...

If you want to save your old files, then you will have to go through them and archive them to an external hard drive or another medium of removable storage. You should leave at least 10% of your hard drive capacity as free space.

If you can't boot from your hard drive, then you will have to boot from a bootable CD, DVD, or removable hard drive. If you have another Mac, then you can use FireWire disc target mode.
 
You could hold down Cmd-S at startup to get to single user mode, i.e. the console. From there, you can mount the filesystem and go about deleting the files you don't really need. If you find a couple of GB that you don't need, it'll start working again. *NEVER* let the harddrive become too filled. Generally, 10% of the system volume should be free.
