StartupDisk preference in OSX bombs

I installed OSX Puiblic Beta on my bronze 500Mhz PB G3 with 12GB drive 256MB memory onto same HFS+ partition as my existing OS 9. Everything was working great, than today I was unable to boot back into OS X. The startup disk preference crashes everytime!! I select. Other preferences work fine like network, monitor, sounds etc..etc.. I tried to find the prefence application(not sure if it is a true application) on the OSX install CD but couldn't.

note preferences in OSX is the equivelent of control panels in OS9.

This is usually because a Mac OS 9.0.4 CDROM is mounted.
The Mac OS 9.0.0 CD doesn't cause this.
