Stickies vanished

I use a Mac Book Pro -Intel - running 10.4.11. Was using Word and Excel and had some large items on the clipboard when the computer froze. Could not get the frozen applications to force quit, nor would the computer restart or shutdown from the menu, so I pushed the "on" button, waited 20 seconds or so, then started up. Stickies had disappeared! I had a lot (not the max, but a lot). So far I've searched for stickies using spotlight, verified disk permissions, deleted the stickies preferences & database, checked permissions on "get info", looked for recovered files, to no avail. All I get is the welcome: how to use stickies. I know now that I should have backed them up - but I didn't. So - are they forever lost?

Did you backup the prefs and database? That's where your info is... As long as you can get the Stickies application reinstalled you could access the old data in those files.

Do you have the original install discs? The application will be on there somewhere. There is a way of installing it without a full install. Sorry, I can't remember how... Someone else will have to tell you how.

As long as your stickies database exists, ~/Library/StickiesDatabase, you should be able to copy the same version of the stickies application to your Applications folder and that should do it (faster sometimes than using Pacifist).
Stickies is quite small so you could even get it sent by email to replace it. It is probably the same version with 10.5 as 10.4 so send me an email with your address if you can't find it elsewhere and I will email it to you. (9 MB)

Help! I have exactly the same problem as the original poster. The StickiesDatabase file exists, but Stickies does not seem to find any of my data there. Can anyone help me recover the data from my lost notes?

~/Library/StickiesDatabase is the database where all the data on your stickies for your user is located at.
(or, Macintosh HD/Users/Yourusername/Library/StickiesDatabase for the longer path).
If that path is empty, you'll be looking at data recovery software and services.

Saw on a MAC thread..I've read 32 different/same ways to get stickies back...Nothing working...
App. opens but yellow stickies are now blank. Also won't save new ones, but really need to retrieve old ones..

Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch!!

How big is or was that stickies database?
When was it modified? Did you ever remove or replace it?
What are the permissions of the stickies database? (Apple+i to get info, and look at sharing&permission section). It should be [your user] = read& write, staff = read only, everyone = read only. Also the options under General for 'stationary pad' or 'locked' should NOT be selected.

All the data in your stickies is in that database.

Thanks Giaguara. I think I'm gonna call it a loss..All permissions are in tact. Now when I click the widget, no stickies come up. Before at least they were blank..Stickies seems to be a silly program that I remember from the early 90's. Unfortunately I had some major information on there...BTW: Where is "general?"

Cheers!

"general" is in the info window, on top of the window, just below the icon. If it's not showing its properties, click on the triangle next to it to expand.

Wait, are you talking about stickies the widget, not the application? The database for that is different. I've disabled dashboard on this Mac so I can't fast check where it would create the changes, but most likely it would still be in ~/Library/ somewhere. (It may even be in Application Support in there).

Is the Stickies widget present in your system? [HD]/Library/Widgets/Stickies.

Did you ever resolve this problem? I have the same problem. How could Apple screw up such a simple application ( I ran it smoothly in the days of Windows 95) and user instructions are written as if they were written in China?

I have managed to recovered my stickies text with the StickiesDatabase but is there a way to take this text edit file and open it into new stickies.. or just anything easier to read that the symbol-y text edit version?
