ok i have a problem with my ibook g3, i'm thinking she may have crashed.

when i turn it on it starts up, then goes to a blue screen with a loading icon on the bottom. then it turns to a black screen with white font:

Darwin/BSD (silverg3.local) (console)
Login:

no matter what i do, it is invalid. so, when i type anything it says

Login: Feb 13 yadda yadda silverg3 mdimportserver[132]: Could not create DiskArb session or approval session.

after a while it will continually say

hfs_relocate: didn't move into metadata zone

someone help me out!

what you got there is OS X is booting into single user mode. Now you can do this but holding down the apple key + the s key at boot. But this sounds as if the startup listing on your PRAM has been changed to startup this way. Frist try doing a PRAM reset by holeding down the apple key and the p key and the r key when you restart the system. You should hear the startup chime keep holding this down till you hear the chime for the 3td time. Then see if it will not boot the right way. If that does not help. try reseting you PRAM, Mind you you need to have your iBook pullged in to do this. Hold down the shift key and th fn key and the ctrl key all at the same time. try restarting you system. If that did not work get you OS disk out and do a aricve reinstall of the OS. Your files will not be lost doing this. If that don't work. I have don't know what to tell you. I have done this on my G3 PowerBook AKA Wallstert. some time ago now. I had been messing in termail and did this to myself. Hope this works for you.

for one thing there are no know Virus on the Mac OS X systems. 2nd how old is you system. if it with a year old then call apple. if it has apple care on it then call apple. it sounds as if the main borad in the laptop has gone bad and is droping you in to openfirmware and will not boot in to any OS.

i might be SOL on this one. i bought the ibook 2nd hand from a work friend. if i can remember correctly he purchased it in '04. this is my first apple, is apple care like insurance? and is that a service he may have cancelled or is there a one-time fee? i'll ask him tomorrow. thanks camgangrel21, i'm gonna keep trying to reset the PRAM but i am guessing you're right about the main board going bad. i've heard of people stuck on the blue screen, but the black screen? it's driving me crazy

Apple care is kind of like insurance but not. what it does is take and let you have up to 3 more years of care from apple. That will fix about anything that mass up on your computer. No apple care is a one time thing you pay for at the time you get you apple computer. As for it being cancelled no it can't. The nice thing about apple care it is not something linked to a person but the computer. Hope you the best. I would suggest not jumping to conclusions about hardware problems just yet. Do you have the system discs? Put the first one in and start the machine while holding the C key. That should boot from the disc. As camgangrel21 mentioned, you can do an "Archive and Install". That will reinstall the operating system but preserve your data. Be careful NOT to select the option that would erase your hard drive and install.

**Warning: Reinstalling your operating system could cause data loss. It's not likely, but it is possible. This is true with computers in general.

Let us know how it goes.
