Streaming TV direct on the net?

I think I will be the first with this question,, haha

I am Swedish but live in Cyprus. Now we are fortunate and can catch some Swedish Digital satellite channels BUT as from 2/2-2004 they will change the transponder on that satellite and it will be IMPOSSIBLE to get them anymore ::evil::

I was therefore starting to play with the thought to stream the channel from Sweden to here ::angel::

What would it take to do that? Is there a good way of compressing the signal before streaming? What bandwidth would it take for one stream?

I don't even know if I'm writing in the right forum, but I have to start some where :D

You can use an analog-DV converter box and QuickTime Broadcaster for that, but you'll have to figure out some way to remote control the satellite receiver over the net to switch channels :p
You should use MPEG4 at minimum 300 kbps, but you'll notice artifacts even at 1 Mbps.

Hmm!
I was getting some hint's in terms of getting the uncoded MPEG signal directly from the decoder and stream it directly without D/A/D and then use your own decoder or use an X-box as receiver?

To control the decoder remote is the least of the problems :)

But then it maybe will take to much of bandwidth? Here we can get a maximum of 1.5-Mbit/s ADSL but that's VERY expensive and I would prefer if I could use the normal 640-Kbit/s which is affordable :)

Allso I guess it will depend on how good the internet connection between Sweden and Cyprus is?
