Stupid Apple firmware update instructions

Software updater told me I had a new version of firmware (v 4.4.8), but it looks like Apple had someone from Microsoft write their instructions - a little old fashioned clear and easily understood Enlgish and/or a technical writer who knew how to do his/her job would really help here.

The instructions say:

1. Click Shut Down to shut down your computer. You will need to provide an Administrator password to authorize the update.
(the Shut Down they are referring to is a button on the window of the firmware update instructions window).

2. Press and hold in the Power button until you hear a long tone or see the Power button light flash repeatedly. Release the Power button when you hear the tone or see the Power button light flash. The update starts automatically.

Note" If these instructions are shown again after the machine starts up, please review the instructions and begin the update process again.

Well, the stupid instructions have reappeared 6 times. What is not clear to me is this can be taken two ways:

1. I click Shutdown, the new window asking for my admin password appears. I type my password, click Ok then press and hold the power button.

2. I click Shutdown, the new window asking for my admin password appears. I type my password, click Ok, let the machine shut down then press and hold the power button.

I suspect #1 is the right thing to do - it is similar to updating firmware when Macs had a programmers button, but I swear I did this twice and held the darn button until my thumb turned blue and did not get a tone or flashing button. If I do #2, it launches into the current firmware where I can type "mac-boot" to boot the machine.

I'll try #1 again now, but I find this a little frustrating.

Okay, I called Apple and after trying to reset my old firmware via "reset-NVRAM" and "reset-ALL" failed, he had me unplug my non-apple keyboard and mouse and USB hub, then plug in the Apple Keyboard and mouse and it worked (though after one boot where the DVD/CD door opened and close three times).

By the way, it is what I called interpretation #2 that is the correct way to run the updater. Had they added something like: "After your computer has shut down, press and hold the Power button." I wouldn't have tried both ways five times each and more quickly realized there was some other issue involved.
