Subscribing to podcasts

Why isn't it possible to subscribe to podcast feeds directly from Firefox?

i.e. Rather than using a separate tool, like iPodderX?

P.S. What I really want to do is subscribe to podcast feeds directly from within iTunes. Hopefully this is something Apple is working on.

for those of us who are not in the know... what is podcast? (i figure it is streaming music but what makes it special?)

It just requires someone to write an extension, which overall is pretty simple.

Have any programming experience?
