Superdrive fails to mount discs

The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 can't mount disks, both CD and DVD, about 90 percent of the time.

I've tried resetting the PRAM, but I don't know if it's related to this.

You are unlucky Matshita customer No 1xx9. There are many reports of its failure, very few of its success. Sure, they work okay for a while, but die early. Some refer to the 4th - 7th letters of its name as highly significant. My suggestion and recommendation is to go Pioneer. Reliable, they go the distance, and they work really well with Mac.
