Switch off speech

Hi all, can anyone tell me how I switch of speech on my iMac? I can't figure it out. Shouldn't there be some kind of 'off' switch somewhere? Everytime I do anything the computer tells me about it.

In system preference, go to the speech option and select it on or off. You can also check out Universal Access, perhaps you have voice over selected, which would speak what the mouse and system are doing.
