Symbolic links and aliases

Well, I did it - I ran out of room on my 15 GB OSX partition. I have a ton of documents, so I moved my documents folder to another paritition and this gave me plenty of breathing space. My only problem is I like to work like this - I keep aliases on my desktop to various directories within my documents directory, espcially one called "things to file" - problem is, now that my documents folder is on another drive, copying a file from the desktop to any of these aliases leaves the original on my desktop. Is there any way I can use symbolic links and/or aliases to avoid this - so when I drag something from my desktop to an alias (leading to a directory on another drive) it will no longer reside on my desktop?

Also, any ideas on moving my i-photo files to another drive and/or sharing them with my wife's user account?

I know I could spend hours reformatting and reinstalling OS X on a larger partition, but even if I had the time to do this, I think I would like to work the way I have it now. I always thought a strength of *nix was its ability to work across different drives.

P.S. I read some posts on moving my user directory to the root of another drive, but they didn't seem to have all the issues worked out. If anyone has good experiences with doing that, please let me know.

Thanks!
