System Preferences Lockup

I tried adjusting the screen resolution on my Mini mac and the System Preferences window has now locked up. I cannot change anything and can't close it without a force closure. After this the force closure window can't be closed. I have tried using a different monitor and re started loads of times but it seems corrupted.

I've noticed that OS9 applications seem to be working OK but upon searching the web I can see this is a common type of problem with OSX.

One site suggested having an alternative login profile but this is too late now for me.

Can I do anything without having to re install OSX totally?

Try booting up in Single User Mode by holding down Apple-S after the startup chime. This will put you into command-line mode, but don't fear as there are instructions on what to do once you reach the prompt.

In any case, once you're at the prompt, type the following:
/sbin/fsck -yf <Hit the return key.>

Note the space between "/sbin/fsck" and "-yf".

This will start a disk check on the Mac. Once it completes, type reboot to restart the Mac. Once it boots up, see if everything was resolved and post back with the results.

Good luck.
