Does anyone know how to change some of the system sounds in OSX. I have some sweet Strongbad sounds that I want to use. There is a startup, a shutdown, and a trash sound. Anyone know how to accomplish this?
 
You can currently set only the default sound, sadly, though there are a couple of Haxies on version tracker that provide for more system sound support.
You can add sounds to the folder /System/Library/Sounds.
 
Well, you could poke around in here:
/System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/
and replace the .aifs with your own. I wonder why some of these sounds are unused?… well, at least on my systems.

Edit: Ah, you were probably responding to the original poster's question. I resurrected this thread from 4 months ago, no clue if the original poster's still reading or not =)
 
Well, it's easy to change your alert sound, but it's nearly impossible to change the startup chime without hacking the firmware or something crazy like that.
 
Right, my question was:

Do the sounds have to be in .AIFF format? Or can I use something else?
 
It depends. Alert sounds: I don't think so, try it. Replacing system sounds: You bet. Plus, they have to have the same name or the OS will get confused.
