Test slow page loads?

OK, I'm fortunate. At work it's DSL modem, at home it's cable modem. I rarely have to suffer through a 56K modem dail-up connection. :)

So, I'm wondering if there is a utility out there that allows me to set a speed and surf the internet at that speed...

Don't know about a utility, but many ISP's allow free dialup for their cable modem/dsl customers. Earthlink for instance does this. You could check with your isp and see if they provide this service as well. You could then dial up and give it a try without having to actually pay any money.

Another more tricky thing is that many cable/dsl modems allow you to adjust their bandwidth, upstream and down. Some people use this to unthrottle their modems, but it's a risky proposition as many isp can detect when this occurs. Don't know if they'd complain about you setting your parameters to _lower_ than what your account calls for though. I recommend a google search if you're interested in this route.

You should try that on 28 K. Because in many cases the 56 K are far less than that in practise...

I subscribe through Earthlink; I completely forgot I had that option. I'll have to get that rigged up.

But I no options for simulating it? I'm kind of surprised!

Good point, if such a software exists I would like to have it to limit the bandwidth of my children sharing my connection !

Correct me if I am wrong here, but as I understand the man pages of ipfw (the built-in firewall in OSX) it has the possibility of controlling the bandwidth.

Not sure if it'll work, but maybe it's worth a try?
