hey guys i need some help. i got my g5 about 2 months ago but i still can't get any audio input. any ideas/known faults with this kinda thing? i've tried microphones, line-ins, even attaching my guitar to garageband, but never any hint of a signal. ive tried all i can but macOS can be quite restrictive when it wants to be. is it hardware or software?

PLease help. apple support is kinda useless

Hi Lt Major Burns and welcome to the forum.
Did you switch the input device in your System Preferences -> Audio to "line-in"? Put a headphone into your micro jack and blow into the headphones. Do you see any signal?
Another rather desperate hint: repair permissions.

yeah i've played with everything even audio related to try and get a signal, but there is just no response. it's irritating cos the mic worked first time in my mac-hating friends pc who thinks i'm stupid for buying my mac. which i now, of course, love more than my mother

It's a new machine. You may have a hardware problem. I had the same problem when I bought a G4. Apple had to replace the Logic Board.
Call Apple. If you don't get satisfaction with the tech you talk to, ask to be escalated up to a higher tier tech, and don't take no for an answer.

in reply to this old thread, which may be useful to new searches, the Power Mac G5 doesn't have a powered microphone socket, like in conventional PC's, more a dedicated line-in. the difference being the power, you need to send in an amplified source for the mac to pick it up, a dead-state microphone just won't work. Try a USB microphone if this feature is needed.
