Time Machine only dedicated to external HD?

I have an external Hard Drive for my eMac that I was using specifically to store photos and misc. items on. I would like to start using this HD for Time Machine. If I took these items off of my exernal Hard Drive would Time Machine automatically store them for me and or can I plop them back on the external hard drive? Forgive my ignorance as I have little experience.

Yes, Time Machine will back up your pictures by default. Time Machine will use your entire hard drive space for backups. When it gets full, it will start to delete older backups. Therefore it's usually best to have a dedicated backup drive rather than put other things on there unless it's a really big drive.
